Dear Parents of 5th Grade Band Students for 2005-2006,

Central Park School will offer the opportunity for your child to play in the school band during the 2005-2006 school year. Your child has indicated an interest in being in the Band at this time. In order to maintain the high standards for the band, it is suggested that only those students with excellent conduct and grades (A-B-C) should take band at the elementary level. Students are 'pulled' from regular classes two times per week for band during school.

August is the time to rent or purchase an instrument from a local music store. There are several music stores in Birmingham that have instruments available:

Art's Music Phone 995-8376 995-8377 Fax 4647-O Highway 280 Birmingham, AL 35242
Birmingham Percussion Center 1615 Montgomery Highway, Suite 158, Birmingham, AL 35216, Tel: (205) 823-9911
Alabama Music Center (Homewood)  2819 Crescent Ave. 879-9191
Bailey Brothers Music - Band Instruments - Phone (205) 714-7827, 1006 20th Street South, Birmingham, Alabama 35205
BandFolio (www.bandfolio.com  Band Director J. Evans) Phone 620-1163
  Music Education Resources from BandFolio

The sales staff at the music stores can help students with the proper selection of an instrument for your child. Students need to try out the instrument to make sure they have the proper embouchure (position of the mouth on the instrument) to play that instrument. Most students choose to play the flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, or snare drum / bells. We are not able to purchase, rent, or sell instruments to students through the school. Students should purchase the cleaning supplies and accessories that are used for their instrument. Also, 5th Grade students should purchase the (Red) Standard of Excellence Book 1 for their instrument. This is our lesson book that will be used each year.

'Try-outs' are done IF time allows and IF we are able to get into the Band Room when school starts. (The Band Room is an office storage room during the Summer.) Testing is done to let each student try instruments before they buy or rent one. This enables the student to see which instrument(s) that they might be able to play better than others. This list will be posted on the band web page so that parents can see what instruments the students have tried. Notices of students that 'tried-out' for band will be sent home along with this form.

We only need a couple of snare drum students each year. We have had too many the last couple of years, and as a result, not all of them are able to play at the Band Evaluation in May. We need more students to play woodwind and brass instruments this coming year. There is much more information available about the Band, including the Band Handbook on the school website, for those who have access to the Internet. Our school website address is www.centralparkschool.com.

If you are interested in having your child participate in the band at Central Park, please sign and return the form at the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year. If you have Internet access, you can email me this Summer with questions / comments / info that your child will be in the Band. My email address is listed on the Contact page of the www.musictechteacher.com web site. Please include your child's name and school in the Subject line of the email!  Also, include your name when sending me email.

Thank you,
Ms. K. Garrett
